FBA and BIP
A Functional Behavioral Assessment, or FBA, is used to collected data on a student who is having behavior problems. This data is later used in writing a behavior plan. There are four main types of data that are collected on a student. First of all, data is collected to see if there are certain people with whom the behavior problems most often occur. Secondly, data is collected to see if there is a certain time of day that the student most often exhibits the behavior problems. Third, data is collected to see if the behavior manifests itself most during a certain activity or subject in school. Finally, data is collected to see if location has any impact on when the problem behaviors occur. The data that is taken must be extremely descriptive, specific, and measurable about what is happening during the problem behavior. This data is then analyzed and used as baseline data for creating a Behavior Intervention Plan. For more intervention on FBA's, please visit the LiveScribe Pencast below, created by Professor Kimberly Arsenalt.
A Behavior Intervention Plan, or BIP, is a plan created after a FBA has gathered data on a student's problem behaviors. This plan is created to help students change unacceptable behaviors into socially acceptable behaviors. The first step to creating a BIP, is to decide what the one behavior issue is that most needs to be addressed. This is called the target behavior. Secondly, a replacement behavior must be decided upon. This must be a behavior that is appropriate, but still closely resembles the target behavior so as to make the transition easy for the student. Next, the teacher must teach the student the socially acceptable behavior and help the student to build the skills necessary to successfully perform the socially acceptable behavior. The teacher must also make any adjustments to the classroom that will help this student succeed. Whenever the student is then using the replacement behavior, positive reinforcement should be used so that the student knows that the effort he or she is putting into this is not going unnoticed. A crisis plan must also be included in the BIP. This is a plan for what to do if the student does not respond well to the behavior plan and becomes a danger to themselves or others. Finally, data must once again be collected to see if the intervention really has worked.
Much of the above information was learned by listening to the two Pencasts below, created by Professor Kimberly Arsenalt. If you would like to learn more details about FBA's or BIP's, please feel free to listen to these. Also, below is a sample BIP that I created with a few of my classmates.
